Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Jiu-Jitsu Class In Session

Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) translates to "the gentle art".  It is referred to as such because the art utilizes leverage and balance rather than force and strength.  Also the finishing movements are viewed as a more humane alternative to striking.

Jiu Jitsu actually originated in Japan, but was teaked on the grouind in Brazil.  The Gracie family produced a very practical form called Brazillian Jiu Jitsu.  BJJ is a martial art focusing largely on grappling and groundfighting.  It promotes the principle that a smaller weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend themselves against a larger stronger assailant.

Brazillian Jiu Jitsu can be trained for self defense, sport grappling (gi and no gi) and mixed martial arts competition and has found its way into the training regiment of nearly every sucessful martial artist worldwide.
